The “Engine” room

Busa 5

Hayabusa Engine 2002 Gen 1. This is the engine we run in the Hayabusa Rally Starlet.

It is a very stock engine and that’s how we like it to keep the costs down. The camshafts are stock although we have fitted some adjustable cam gears to dial in the camshafts a little better. We have fitted a manual Cam chain adjuster from APE Raceparts to rid of the problematic Hydraulically tensioned stock one. It runs the original stock valve train, with the stock original stock pistons and rods. Since the motor was fitted in 2006 it has had Rings and bearings twice now, and both times the bearings still looked as good as new.

The crankshaft has been balanced to a third of a gram and the balance shaft has been removed. We have installed a Gen 2 Gearset in the Transmission. A couple of main reasons being , 5 dogs on each of the gears instead of 4, and a bigger output shaft diameter. We also installed tool steel shift shafts.

The clutch has been uprated with heavy clutch springs and  a billet inner and outer basket. The Steel and fibre plates are the original stock items and have been super reliable.

We removed the stock water pump and installed a Davies Craig electric pump.

The air box is a stock Hayabusa item , turned upside down  and trimmed slightly to fit. It was then duplicated in Carbon with a carbon ducting of the correct size forcing the air in.

The header pipes are a custom tuned length system that was developed with the length of the exhaust system being longer than stock. A power bomb was also installed to created some additional torque lost with the longer than normal system.
